Waiting for Something

Layer I

The Graphic Novel

Four chapters in ink. Read the panels; the notes in the margin connect each scene to history.

Paris, 1948. The war is over. God, many say, is dead too.
A gaunt writer at a Paris café table
"What do I know of man's destiny? I could tell you more about radishes."
January 5, 1953. Théâtre de Babylone. A country road. A tree. Evening.
Two figures waiting by a bare tree
VLADIMIR: Well? Shall we go? ESTRAGON: Yes, let's go. (They do not move.)
Meanwhile, Ionesco fills rooms with chairs, and towns with rhinoceroses.
Chairs multiplying in a room, a rhinoceros at the window
"Take a circle, caress it, and it will turn vicious!"
And Genet stages the mirror: maids playing mistresses, beggars playing kings.
An empty stage with a single tree in a spotlight
"The play is over. Go home… where everything is falser than here."

To be continued… (it isn't).
